Adani Energy Solutions Wins Transmission Contract to Evacuate 4.5 GW of Renewable and Storage Power in India

Adani Energy Solutions Ltd. has secured a major transmission project in Maharashtra valued at approximately USD 493.25 million, aimed at evacuating renewable energy generated in Karnataka to major load centres in Maharashtra while supporting the state's expanding pumped storage ecosystem.

Project Scope and Structure

The project, formally titled "Network Expansion Scheme in Western Region to Cater to Pumped Storage Potential near Satara (up to 4500 MW) - Part A," was awarded through the Tariff-Based Competitive Bidding process, in which AESL emerged as the lowest bidder. It will be housed under a Special Purpose Vehicle called Satara Power Transmission Ltd. and is slated for delivery within 36 months.

The infrastructure to be built under the contract includes the establishment of a 765/400 kilovolt substation at Satara, a Kolhapur-Satar765-kilovoltkV double-circuit transmission line, and augmentation of the Kolhapur pooling station along with associated transmission infrastructure. In total, the project will add 562 circuit kilometres of transmission lines and 9,000 MVA of transformation capacity to AESL's existing portfolio.

 

Strategic Significance for Grid Connectivity

Beyond its role in enabling renewable energy evacuation, the project is designed to strengthen the inter-regional transmission corridor between India's Western and Southern grids.

 

It will support the growing pumped storage ecosystem specifically in the Satara, Pune, and Mumbai Metropolitan Regions, areas that have been identified as carrying significant pumped storage potential.

Kandarp Patel, Chief Executive Officer of Adani Energy Solutions Ltd., described pumped storage projects as a critical enabler of India's clean energy transition, citing their capacity to provide the flexibility and reliability required to integrate large-scale renewable energy into the national grid.

 

Patel said the Satara transmission project would create a vital transmission backbone to support both renewable energy evacuation and energy storage deployment, strengthening power flows between Southern and Western India.

Impact on AESL's Transmission Portfolio

With the addition of this project, AESL's cumulative transmission network will reach 29,739 circuit kilometres and 1,43,425 MVA of transformation capacity. The company's transmission orderbook now stands at approximately USD 8.92 billion following this award.

The project was announced on August 26, 2026, and represents one of several specialised transmission schemes that AESL has pursued as part of its stated strategy of connecting resource-rich renewable energy zones with major industrial and urban load centres across India.

Context Within India's Renewable Energy Targets

The award comes as India works toward its stated target of installing 500 gigawatts of non-fossil energy capacity by 2030. Transmission infrastructure has been widely recognised as a prerequisite for achieving that goal, particularly as renewable generation capacity expands in geographically dispersed locations that are often distant from population and industrial centres.

AESL described itself as the country's largest private transmission company. In addition to its transmission business, the company operates retail electricity distribution serving approximately 13 million consumers in metropolitan Mumbai and the industrial hub of Mundra Special Economic Zone. The company is also active in smart metering and cooling solutions as part of a broader energy services offering under the Adani portfolio.

The Satara project reflects a trend of large-scale transmission investment being directed toward enabling not just conventional renewable energy sources such as solar and wind, but also pumped hydro storage, which stores energy by pumping water uphill during periods of low demand and releasing it through turbines when power is needed.

 

As variable renewable generation grows on the Indian grid, such storage capacity is increasingly viewed as essential for managing supply and demand imbalances.

Procurement and Delivery Framework

The use of the Tariff-Based Competitive Bidding mechanism for this contract follows standard practice for transmission projects in India, where private developers compete on the basis of the transmission tariff they are willing to accept over the life of the project. AESL's success as the lowest bidder in this process secured the right to develop, build, and operate the infrastructure under the SPV structure.

The 36-month delivery timeline for the Satara transmission project places its expected completion in late 2028 or 2029, assuming work proceeds on schedule from the award date in August 2026.
