ACCIONA Energía has commenced commercial operations at its Forty Mile Wind Farm in Alberta, a 280 megawatt (MW) facility that now ranks among the ten largest wind farms in Canada and stands as the company’s largest project of its kind in North America.
Equipped with 49 Nordex turbines each with a capacity of 5.7 MW and a tower height of 108 meters.
Major Renewable Milestone
The Forty Mile Wind Farm is expected to offset approximately 600,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually, equivalent to the environmental benefit of planting 25 million trees. The project also delivered over 200 direct jobs during peak construction and will support 25 full-time roles for ongoing operations and maintenance.
“This is a landmark development for ACCIONA Energía in North America,” said a company spokesperson, highlighting the project's scale and environmental impact.
Local Investment and Community Support
Over its operational life, the wind farm is projected to generate more than CAD 133 million (EUR 85 million) in property tax revenues, supporting public infrastructure and services in the surrounding areas.
ACCIONA Energía has also committed to community engagement through financial support to local non-profit organizations, including the Bow Island Food Bank, Root Cellar Food & Wellness Hub, and the Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter Society.
Growing North American Presence
With the addition of the Forty Mile facility, ACCIONA Energía now operates 3.45 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy capacity across North America, spanning solar, concentrated solar power, wind, and battery energy storage systems.
The successful launch of this Alberta wind farm reinforces the company’s long-term strategy to expand clean energy production and contribute to a low-carbon future across the continent.
