ABB and GridBeyond have announced a partnership to launch a battery energy storage system-as-a-service (BESS-as-a-service) offering aimed at commercial and industrial customers. The service enables businesses to benefit from advanced energy storage without upfront capital investment, offering a fully managed solution that reduces costs, cuts emissions, and improves energy resilience.

Turnkey Energy Storage with No Upfront Costs

The new model combines ABB’s electrification and automation technologies with GridBeyond’s AI-driven energy management platform. Under the arrangement, customers receive and operate battery storage systems through a service-based agreement, removing the need for direct ownership or capital expenditure.

The offering is enhanced by the involvement of climate technology and finance firm Tallarna, which contributes data analytics, insurance solutions, and financing support to reduce the financial and operational risks typically associated with BESS projects.

Smart Optimization and Market Participation

GridBeyond’s platform will optimize ABB’s BESS assets in real-time, allowing customers to participate in demand-side response programs and take advantage of fluctuating energy prices. AI-based forecasting tools will support decisions on battery charging and discharging, helping to align operations with market conditions while extending the lifespan of the battery systems.

“Businesses stand to gain through lower energy bills, reduced emissions, and improved operational stability,” the partners said in a joint release. “Our integrated approach also delivers enhanced predictability and performance in increasingly volatile energy markets.”

Strategic Investment and Growth Plans

The launch builds on ABB’s strategic investment in GridBeyond in 2024 and aligns with its broader expansion strategy, which includes a $120 million commitment to expand low-voltage electrification product manufacturing in the U.S. by March 2025.

With the combined expertise of ABB, GridBeyond, and Tallarna, the BESS-as-a-service model is expected to accelerate the adoption of flexible, sustainable energy systems globally, particularly among energy-intensive sectors seeking cost-effective decarbonization solutions.
