An e-methanol plant with a production capacity of 150 tonnes per day is being developed at Kandla, Gujarat. The project will support the production of low-carbon fuel using renewable energy and sustainable feedstocks.

The initiative brings together Assam and Gujarat to advance clean fuel production and strengthen India’s green energy ecosystem.

Ceremony marks start of green fuel project.

A foundation-laying ceremony has been held for a 150-tonne-per-day e-methanol plant at Kandla, with Assam and Gujarat coming together for the green fuel initiative.

The event was attended by Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who were photographed together ahead of the ceremony.

Employment expectations outlined

Chief Minister Sarma had earlier said the project would provide employment to nearly 3,000 youths. He also indicated that APCL would be bringing its methanol production expertise to the venture, positioning the plant as a combination of the two states' respective strengths in the emerging e-methanol sector.

Green fuel push at Kandla

The project forms part of a broader green fuel push centered on Kandla, where the e-methanol facility is to be established. The laying of the foundation marks the formal start of the plant's development, with the stated capacity of 150 tonnes per day making it a significant addition to India's e-methanol production plans.

Collaboration between two states

The initiative brings together Assam and Gujarat in a partnership framed around green fuel production. Assam Chief Minister Sarma's earlier remarks suggested a division of contributions, with APCL's methanol production expertise cited as Assam's input to the Kandla-based project, while the location in Gujarat anchors the plant within that state's industrial geography.

Looking ahead

With the foundation now laid, the 150-TPD e-methanol plant moves from the announcement to the construction phase. The employment figure of nearly 3,000 youths, as stated by the Assam Chief Minister, and the involvement of APCL's production expertise remain the key commitments attached to the project as it proceeds.
