Microsoft to Develop Regional Data Center Hub in Thailand

Microsoft has announced significant commitments to develop a data center region in Thailand. The commitments include building a new data center in Thailand, providing AI skilling opportunities for over 100,000 people, and supporting the nation’s growing developer community. These commitments build on Microsoft’s memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Royal Thai Government to envision the nation’s digital-first, AI-powered future.

Around 2,000 developers and business and technology leaders attended the event, including the Prime Minister of Thailand, Srettha Thavisin. The Prime Minister expressed that the announcement with Microsoft is a significant milestone in the journey of their ‘Ignite Thailand’ vision. This vision aims to develop the country’s stature as a regional digital economy hub, enhancing innovation and R&D capabilities while also strengthening the tech workforce.

Microsoft’s digital infrastructure commitment includes establishing a new datacenter region in Thailand. The datacenter region will expand the availability of Microsoft’s hyperscale cloud services, facilitating enterprise-grade reliability, performance, and compliance with data residency and privacy standards.

 

Microsoft will also enable the Royal Thai Government to adopt a cloud-first policy with an AI skill development program for developers and government IT personnel. Satya Nadella highlighted the important role developers play in shaping Thailand’s digital-first, AI-powered future.

 

Dhanawat Suthumpun, Managing Director of Microsoft Thailand, stated that Microsoft is dedicated to helping Thailand excel as a digital economy.  This announcement comes a day after Microsoft announced investments worth USD 1.7 billion in artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud facilities in neighbouring Indonesia. Microsoft has been expanding its  data center footprint in Southeast Asia, announcing plans for new regional data centers in Malaysia and Indonesia in 2021.
