GIGA Storage Secures Approval to Construct 600 MW BESS Project in Belgium

GIGA Storage has received approval to construct a 600/2.4 GW MWh battery energy storage system in Belgium. Named the GIGA Green Turtle, this project is slated to commence in 2025, with an estimated completion date of 2028. Located in Dilsen-Stokkem, eastern Belgium, the GIGA Green Turtle is poised to become one of Europe's largest battery storage projects.

Positioned adjacent to a new 380 kV high-voltage station operated by Elia, the transmission system operator, the site strategically aligns with the high-voltage line from Van Eyck to Gramme, optimizing its grid connection. Previously, the industrial estate designated for the BESS project housed a zinc factory. Before GIGA Storage acquired the land from the factory's owners, another energy company had plans to develop a battery project at the same location.

The BESS project will consist of 20 batteries, each paired with an inverter, 185 medium-voltage transformers, and five high-voltage transformers with a combined capacity of 1,500 MVA. Additionally, a 25,650 square meter planting zone will surround the battery park. GIGA Green Turtle aims to contribute to the electricity grid by storing the equivalent amount of energy consumed by 330,000 families annually.

In January of this year, GIGA Storage CEO Ruud Nijs remarked, “With these types of large energy storage projects, we contribute to energy security, both during and after the transition from fossil to renewable sources.”

GIGA Storage has set a target to deliver 5 GW of BESS projects in Europe by 2030. Projects such as the 300 MW/1,200 MWh BESS in the Delfzijl region of the Netherlands are already in development, with several more projects across various European countries anticipated in the coming years.
