Project Overview

The Kaminho (formerly Cameia-Golfinho) floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) project is a major offshore oil development led by TotalEnergies in Angola. As a new-build FPSO vessel, it marks the seventh FPSO deployment by TotalEnergies in the country.

The project features a spread mooring system and is designed to produce up to 70,000 barrels of oil per day. The Final Investment Decision (FID) was approved in 2024, with first oil production targeted for 2028.

The project cost of FPSO Kamino is USD 6 billion, with TotalEnergies holding an 80% stake in the project, while Sonangol Pesquisa & Produção retains a 20% interest. The Cameia FPSO vessel is currently under construction.

FPSO Cameia Location

The Kamino FPSO project is situated in Blocks 20/11 and 21 in the Kwanza Basin, offshore Angola, roughly 100–150 km southwest of Luanda. The fields lie in ultra‑deepwater at depths of approximately 1,700 m (5,610 ft).

Project Background - FPSO Kaminho (Formerly Cameia-Golfinho)

The Kaminho FPSO project marks a transformative development in Angola’s offshore oil and gas sector. The project has been rebranded from Cameia-Golfinho to Kaminho and is backed by a USD 6 billion investment targeting the Cameia and Golfinho pre-salt oil fields.

TotalEnergies, the project operator, along with partners Sonangol and Petronas, reached the Final Investment Decision (FID) in May 2024. A key element of the Kaminho project is the conversion of the VLCC "Alsace" (a 299,999 dwt tanker built in 2012 by Samsung Heavy Industries) into a state-of-the-art FPSO unit.

The contract for this conversion was awarded by Saipem to China Merchants Heavy Industry (CMHI). This FPSO will feature a production capacity of 70,000 barrels of oil per day and will be fully electrified with zero routine flaring with the help of reinjection of associated gas.

Saipem has been awarded three major contracts totaling USD 3.7 billion, covering FPSO EPC (engineering, procurement, construction), a 12-year O&M contract (with an 8-year extension option), and a SURF package involving 30 km of subsea flowlines, risers, and umbilicals.

In September 2024, Siemens Energy has been awarded a contract to develop an 80 MW power generation plant for the Kaminho oil project FPSO. Siemens Energy will design, engineer and supply a high-performance power generation system to the FPSO, ensuring reliable power for the vessel's onboard.

The operations of Kaminho FPSO are expected to commence in 2028, and it will be the seventh FPSO operated by TotalEnergies in Angola.

Current Status And Future Prospects

The FPSO Kaminho project is currently in the engineering and construction phase following a Final Investment Decision in May 2024. Saipem is leading the EPC, operations, and subsea work, with the FPSO being converted from the VLCC Alsace at China Merchants Heavy Industry. Subsea fabrication is underway at Saipem’s Ambriz yard in Angola, with installation activities scheduled for 2026–2027.

First oil is targeted for 2028. As the first deepwater development in Angola’s Kwanza Basin, the project is strategically important for the country’s upstream ambitions and TotalEnergies' low-carbon objectives.
