Project Overview 

The Madison Square Garden sphere, also known as the Las Vegas sphere, is an entertainment complex in Nevada, USA. It is the largest ever spherical structure with the largest high-resolution resolution screen in the world. The sphere has a 16K resolution wraparound interior LED screen, which covers an area of 15,000 square meters. Furthermore, the MSG sphere interior has an 8,600-seat auditorium with immersive video and audio capabilities and 4D physical effects. The outer shell has a much larger 54,000 square meter of LED displays, which can be seen from multiple angles across Las Vegas.

At its widest point, 157 meters wide and 112 meters high, the sphere can hold 18,600 people. The outside LED screen is set on an exoskeleton 30% higher than the dome, supported by 32 trusses, each weighing 100 tons. In addition to the 300-meter pedestrian bridge and 304 parking spots on the land, there were plans to construct a new monorail connecting the Sphere and the Venetian.

Project Background 

The project was constructed by Madison Square Garden Company. Initially, in 2019, the EPC contract was awarded to AECOM, but the contract was shifted to in-house construction management later. ArchKey Technologies completed the preconstruction for this project as well as audiovisual, network, wireless, and security capabilities throughout the facility. Additionally, Populous, a multinational architectural firm specializing in stadiums and large-scale event venues, designed the Sphere.

Sphere is currently owned by Sphere Entertainment Company. When the Madison Square Garden Company first revealed the location in 2018, it was known as the MSG Sphere. However, in April 2023, Madison Square Garden Entertainment, the venue's owner, made a new company named Sphere Entertainment Company.

Vici Properties is a real estate investment trust that owns the property beneath the Venetian Resort and the Sphere. Therefore, although Sphere Entertainment oversees the venue's operations and events, the site itself is owned by a separate entity.

Project Timeline 

• 2018: The Madison Square Garden Company announced the project.
• 2020: Because of the COVID-19 epidemic, construction of the sphere was halted.
• 2020: In August, MSG Entertainment declared that the project's development had resumed.
• 2023: The Sphere is finished on July 4 and will debut with a U2 residency event on September 29.

Structure and Seating

There are nine levels in Sphere. The sphere is 516 feet (157 meters) in width and 366 feet (112 meters) in height. At 875,000 square feet (81,300 m²), it is the biggest spherical structure in the world. With strong internet connectivity, it can hold 20,000 people standing and has seats for 18,600 people.

Video Screens

A 160,000-square-foot (15,000-square-meter) LED screen is installed at the location. With a resolution of 16,000 × 16,000, it is the world's highest-resolution LED screen. Media outlets have given numbers that range from 189 to 254 million diodes to 268,435,456 pixels when discussing the number of pixels on the screen. 

Sound System

The sound system in the sphere uses state-of-the-art technology. It uses the Kirchhoff-Helmholtz integral for crystal-clear audio. Almost a hundred percent of the system comprises 300 mobile modules and 1,586 permanently placed speakers. With 167,000 speaker drivers, amplifiers, and processing channels, the sound system weighs 395,120 pounds (179,220 kg). 464 Holoplot X1 speakers (272 MD96 modules and 192 MD80-S modules) are grouped into 14 clusters and placed in a semi-arch approximately 25 to 30 feet (7.6 to 9.1 meters) above the stage.

4D Effects

Scent and wind are among the 4D characteristics of a sphere, which also has haptic technology in 10,000 seats.

Transportation

There are 304 parking spots on the premises, and more will be accessible at the parking garages for the Venetian Expo, Palazzo, and the neighboring Venetian. Sphere and the exhibition are connected by a pedestrian bridge that is 1,000 feet (300 meters) long.

Project Cost 

The Sphere's initial estimate was USD 1.2 billion, but costs eventually increased. The project cost ultimately exceeded USD 2.3 billion as a result of design modifications, the supply chain issue, and inflation.

Construction-Related challenges

Constructing a large-scale LED sphere was difficult; it involved some construction-related challenges and risks. Some of the challenges faced during the construction include:

• The sphere was supposed to be completed by 2021, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was built and officially opened in 2023.
