PPC Group Begins Construction of 50 MW Battery Storage System in Amyntaio
PPC Group has commenced construction of a new Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Amyntaio, located in the area of Amyntaio TPP. The project represents the company's continued investment in energy storage technology as part of its broader renewable energy strategy.
Technical Specifications and Capacity
The new storage station will feature batteries with a total installed capacity of 50 MW and a storage capacity of 200 MWh. The facility will be capable of supplying the power system with 50 MW of capacity for four hours of continuous operation. The construction will utilize liquid-cooled batteries employing innovative LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) technology. This technology selection aims to maximize both utilized energy and safety during operation of the storage facility.
Project Development and Regional Expansion
PPC Renewables, a wholly-owned subsidiary of PPC Group, is responsible for constructing the new BESS station. The Amyntaio project joins two other electrochemical storage stations already under construction in West Macedonia, specifically in the areas of Kardia and Meliti TPPs. These two existing projects have a combined total installed capacity of 98 MW and storage capacity of 196 MWh.
The company has announced plans for energy storage projects totaling 860 MW in the West Macedonia region of Northern Greece. These comprehensive projects are projected to create over 1,300 jobs during the construction phase and hundreds of jobs during operational phases.

Advanced Storage Technologies and Future Projects
Among the planned energy storage initiatives, two pumped-storage projects are particularly notable. These systems, often referred to as “natural batteries,” utilize two reservoirs located at different elevations to store and generate electricity. The first pumped-storage project is planned for the Kardia mine location, featuring a capacity of 320 MW for eight hours of operation.
The second project will be situated at the South Field mine, with a capacity of 240 MW for 12 hours of continuous operation. The licensing process for both pumped-storage projects has already been completed. Beyond domestic operations, PPC Group is also developing international storage capabilities. A BESS unit is currently under construction in Bulgaria, featuring a nominal capacity of 25 MW and a storage capacity of 55 MWh.
Strategic Importance and Grid Stability
The energy storage units serve a critical role in supporting the operation of adjacent photovoltaic power plants and contributing to electricity system stability. These systems are designed to optimize the management of generation from renewable energy source (RES) power plants, maximizing their contribution and fully harnessing the potential for electricity generation.
Konstantinos Mavros, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of RES PPC Group, emphasized the significance of these developments, stating that “the energy storage projects currently underway in our country will shape the future of the energy system.” He noted that such investments will ensure optimal use of generation from renewable energy sources and enhance the stability of the electricity grid both domestically and throughout the European continent.
Mavros highlighted PPC Group's leadership position in the energy storage sector, explaining that “PPC Group pioneers in this area as our investment plan includes significant investments in energy storage systems.” The storage systems are specifically designed to support grid stability and optimize renewable energy integration, addressing the intermittent nature of solar and wind power generation while ensuring consistent electricity supply to the power system.
