PETRONAS Carigali Sdn Bhd (PETRONAS Carigali), a wholly owned subsidiary of PETRONAS, has achieved its first hydrocarbon production from the Bindu field, which is located 210 kilometers off the coast of Terengganu. The milestone was reached on June 9, 2025, shortly after PETRONAS Carigali took over operatorship of the Gas Production Sharing Contract (GPSC) effective April 1, 2025.
The development highlights the company’s commitment to providing a secure and sustainable gas supply for Peninsular Malaysia.
Key Development Highlights at Bindu Field
The Bindu field development features a newly installed wellhead platform connected to the Guntong E production hub via a 62-kilometer pipeline. It is designed to be unmanned and powered by a solar energy system; both the topside and substructure were fabricated locally, marking a boost for Malaysia’s domestic fabrication capabilities.
The field represents the final greenfield development under the current GPSC terms and is expected to reach peak production of 75 million standard cubic feet of gas per day from two wells.
Partnership and Operations
PETRONAS Carigali operates the Bindu field with a 50 percent participating interest, while ExxonMobil Exploration and Production Malaysia Inc. holds the remaining stake. Together, the partners aim to strengthen gas supply for Peninsular Malaysia, where GPSC operations currently supply nearly half of the national gas demand.

CEO’s Statement on Operational Readiness
Hazli Sham Kassim, Chief Executive Officer of PETRONAS Carigali, said the achievement reflects the company’s technical expertise and readiness as the new GPSC operator. “This first hydrocarbon production establishes PETRONAS Carigali's operational readiness as GPSC operator. It demonstrates our technical expertise, accelerates domestic gas monetization, and most importantly, ensures maximum value from Malaysia's resources for the nation,” Hazli said.
He added that the gas supplied through the GPSC supports both industrial-scale power plants and small-to-medium enterprise (SME) manufacturers, reinforcing the critical role of domestic gas production in Malaysia’s energy security.
Commitment to Safety and Sustainability
PETRONAS Carigali increased its focus on developing commercially successful operations throughout Malaysia’s upstream sector while maintaining high standards of safety, efficiency, and sustainability. The company will also continue to invest strategically to maximize value creation.
