Marinvest Energy, a Norwegian company, has proposed a liquefied natural gas (LNG) export project in Baie-Comeau, Quebec. The project, known as the Marinvest Energy LNG Export Project, involves building floating offshore platforms and a liquefaction plant in Baie-Comeau, as well as a pipeline to connect the facilities to TC Energy Corp.'s Canadian Mainline.
Project Details
Marinvest Energy Canada, the Canadian subsidiary of Marinvest Energy AS, proposed this project, with its chief operating officer, Greg Cano, stating that there is a "strong business case" for the project. The company is currently meeting with stakeholders and partners, including First Nations communities.
Environmental Concerns
Greenpeace Canada has expressed concerns about the project, citing potential environmental impacts and the possibility of the federal government exempting the project from traditional requirements such as permits and environmental reviews. Keith Stewart, senior energy strategist at Greenpeace Canada, noted that Marinvest Energy AS is not a major player in Norway and may be seeking government backing to secure funding.
Port Authority Involvement
The Baie-Comeau Port Management Corp. has been contacted by Marinvest about the project. The port authority is open to accommodating the project if it is deemed feasible and viable. Karine Otis, CEO of the port authority, stated that the project could be a good fit in the energy hub, provided it minimizes environmental impacts and occupies minimal space. The proposal comes after a previous LNG project in Saguenay, Quebec was blocked by the provincial and federal governments due to concerns about greenhouse-gas emissions and impacts on beluga whales. The Marinvest Energy LNG Export Project is still in its early stages, and further details are expected to emerge as the company continues to meet with stakeholders and secure funding.
