Malaysian Utility has Agreed to Buy Power From Solar Projects With a Capacity of 500 Megawatts

Updated on Jan 08, 2024, 05:00 AM IST

Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB), Malaysia's state-owned electric company, has inked 21-year power purchase agreements (PPAs) with ten solar power projects in four states.

According to an article in Malaysian newspaper The Star, which reported the signing of the first nine PPAs after TNB's announcement to the Bursa Malaysia, the solar projects, each with a generation capacity of 50 MWac, were awarded under the fourth-round tender of the national Large Scale Solar procurement program held by regulator Surchanjaya Tenaga in the second half of last year.

With all of the project capacity set to start generating in 2023, Pahang and Perak will each have three solar farms, Kedah will have two, while Penang and Selangor will each have one.

The first solar plant will be built by Selangor-based energy firm subsidiary JAKS Solar Power in southern Seberang Perai, Pulau Pinang, Penang, and will be commissioned on March 30, 2023.

The commencement date for a project proposed by energy provider Uzma Environergy in Sungai Petani, Kedah, would be September 29. A facility at Pekan, Pahang, being developed jointly by the state-owned economic development authority Perbadanan Kemjuan Negeri Pahang and the Kuala Lumpur-based renewables company KPower Bhd, is set to go online a day later.

Ragawang Corp, a Selangor construction company, has set a start date of November 30, 2023, for its solar plant in Pekan, and developer Classic Solar Farm has set a start date of December 20, 2023, for its site, also in Pekan.

On December 30, 2023, construction firm Asiabina Properties will commission its site in Kevian, Perak state, and four other facilities will begin operations on the last day of that year.

Gopeng Bhd, a real estate and palm oil company, will build a site in Gopeng, Perak; Ranhill Utilities, a water and power company, will build a plant in Batang Padang, Perak; TNB subsidiary TNB Renewables will finish a site in Kuala Muda, Kedah; and Sharp Ventures Solar will commission a project in Klang, Selangor Darul Ehsan, with the signing of the latter PPA

The electric utility did not say how much it would pay for solar energy generated at the locations, but pv magazine reported in March that shortlisted developers' bids in the appropriate component of the tender ranged from MYR0.1768 to MYR0.1970/kWh.
