Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has secured a major contract from JSW Energy to execute the Bhavali Pumped Storage Project in Maharashtra, a key infrastructure initiative aimed at enhancing grid stability and supporting the integration of renewable energy sources.
The project will be developed across the Nashik and Thane districts and is set to deliver a total installed capacity of 1500 megawatts (MW). L&T’s Heavy Civil Infrastructure business will be responsible for the complete execution of civil works for the project.
Scope of Work and Technical Overview
Under the contract, L&T will construct approach roads, upper and lower reservoirs, a water conductor system, pressure tunnels, and an underground powerhouse. The 1500 MW capacity will be spread across multiple generating units and is designed to operate as a pumped storage facility — allowing energy to be stored and released to stabilize the grid, particularly as India scales up renewable energy adoption.
The Bhavali project plays a crucial role in managing the variability associated with solar and wind power, ensuring reliable supply and better grid management.
Financial and Strategic Significance
The order falls within L&T’s classification of a "significant" contract, which denotes a value between ₹1,000 crore and ₹2,000 crore. The deal underscores L&T’s expertise in executing complex hydroelectric projects and strengthens its position as a key contributor to India’s renewable energy goals.
“This order highlights our capabilities in delivering large-scale, technically challenging infrastructure essential for the country’s energy transition,” the company noted in a statement.
