LG Energy Solution Vertech, a utility-scale energy storage system (ESS) integration division of LG Energy Solution, has announced a supply agreement with DTE Energy (a diversified energy company) to develop battery energy storage systems across the state of Michigan, covering eight projects that will collectively deliver 1.5 gigawatts of battery storage capacity, or 6 gigawatt hours, over a two-year period.

Scope of the Agreement

The deal, announced from Westborough, involves LG Energy Solution Vertech serving as the energy storage division of LG Energy Solution in the United States.

Under the terms of the agreement, battery systems will be delivered across eight separate projects located within Michigan. All eight projects are designed to meet domestic content requirements.

The battery energy storage systems are intended to store electricity during periods of excess generation and then distribute that power to customers during peak demand periods.

According to the companies, this approach will reduce strain on the grid and decrease the need to start and stop generation as demand fluctuates throughout the day.

LG Energy Solution will provide battery cells manufactured in Michigan as well as in other facilities located in the United States and Canada to support the portfolio of projects.

Executive Statements

Jaehong Park, chief executive officer and president of LG Energy Solution Vertech, emphasized the company's existing presence in Michigan and the significance of the regional partnership.

"Michigan is a key U.S. manufacturing region for our company, where many of our colleagues live and work," Park said. "We're thrilled to work with DTE to bring Michigan-made energy storage to our communities. As more US-made energy storage projects are added to the energy grid, we're building opportunities for advanced roles in the state that support our national energy needs."

Joi Harris, president and chief executive officer of DTE Energy, framed the agreement within the company's broader commitment to economic development and clean energy goals for the state.

"By working with LG Energy Solution Vertech to bring more battery storage online through LG Energy Solution's Michigan manufacturing facility, we're keeping Michigan at the forefront of technology and economic opportunity, creating good-paying jobs in communities while driving responsible growth, improving reliability for our customers, and investing in clean energy solutions," Harris said.

Connection to Data Center Development and Clean Energy Standards

The announcement ties the battery energy storage buildout to DTE's data center development commitments in Michigan. According to the company, DTE's engagement with data center customers is providing a significant boost to battery energy storage capacity in the state, with the aim of making the electric grid cleaner, more reliable, and more resilient.

DTE stated it has identified the resources needed to reliably serve new data center customers without compromising service for existing customers, while remaining in compliance with Michigan's Renewable Portfolio Standard and Clean Energy Standard.

The companies specifically cited DTE's approved contract for the Oracle data center in Saline Township as a relevant example. In that instance, the battery energy storage systems that Oracle is funding are described as being sufficient, by themselves, to meet DTE's portion of Michigan's 2030 clean energy standard for battery storage.

Michigan Manufacturing and Domestic Content

A central element of the agreement is its alignment with domestic manufacturing. LG Energy Solution's Michigan-based manufacturing facility is positioned as a key component of the supply chain for these projects, with battery cells sourced from within the state alongside materials from other U.S. and Canadian facilities.

The requirement that all eight projects meet domestic content standards reflects a broader industry emphasis on locally sourced energy infrastructure components.

The partnership between DTE Energy and LG Energy Solution Vertech represents one of the larger battery storage agreements announced in Michigan in recent years, given both the scale of the capacity involved and the geographic concentration of projects within a single state.

The two-year delivery timeline for the 6 gigawatt hours of storage capacity spans multiple project sites and is expected to bring grid reliability benefits across DTE's service territory.

LG Energy Solution Vertech operates as the U.S. energy storage arm of LG Energy Solution, a South Korean battery manufacturer with manufacturing operations in North America.

The Westborough-based division focuses on utility-scale energy storage systems and has been active in the U.S. market as demand for grid-scale battery infrastructure has grown alongside renewable energy deployment and increased electricity consumption from data centers and industrial customers.
