The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved the Green Energy Corridor (GEC) Phase-2 Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) for 13 GW of renewable power in the Ladakh region. The total estimated cost of the project is around USD 2.5 billion with Central Financial Assistance (CFA) covering 40% of the total project cost. The project is scheduled for completion by the financial year 2029-30.  Power Grid Corporation of India handles the execution of this project.

Prime Minister Modi during his Independence Day speech announced the setting up of a 7.5 GW Solar Park in Ladakh. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy prepared a plan to set up a 13 GW renewable energy capacity with a 12 GWh Energy storage system in Pang, Ladakh. The Power Grid Corporation of India will develop a Voltage Source Converter (VSC) -based High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) System and extra high voltage alternating Current (EHVAC) technology to finish the project.

The transmission line will be integrated with the national grid. An interconnection has also been planned from this project to Leh’s existing Ladakh grid, guaranteeing a steady power supply to the region. Subsequently, it will connect the Leh-Alusteng-Srinagar line. This project will establish 713 km of transmission lines, including 480 KM HVDC line and 5 GW capacity HVDC terminals at Pang in Ladakh.

The project plays a key role in India’s ambitious goal of achieving 500 GW of installed electricity capacity from non-fossil fuel sources by 2030. The project opens up substantial employment opportunities in the Ladakh region.

Apart from this, the project complements the ongoing Intra-State Transmission System Green Energy Corridor Phase-2 (InSTS GEC-2) in multiple states. InSTS GEC-2 focuses on achieving grid integration of 20GW of renewable energy capacity by the year 2026. This initiative also adds around 10,753 circuit km of transmission lines and 27546 MVA capacity of substations. The total estimated project cost is around USD 1.4 billion with CFA amounting to 33%.
