Grenergy (independent renewable energy producer) has entered into a strategic agreement with Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited, known as CATL, for the supply of 1.5 gigawatt-hours of battery storage to support two of its flagship energy projects in Spain.
The deal, announced on May 21, 2026, covers the stand-alone Oviedo storage plant and the hybrid Escuderos complex, and involves the delivery of 252 TENER S battery units.
Deal Structure and Battery Technology
The agreement covers a total of 252 CATL TENER S batteries split between the two Spanish projects. CATL's TENER series uses ultra-high-density containers based on lithium iron phosphate chemistry, designed to maximize efficiency and lifecycle performance in large-scale energy storage assets.
The series features a compact architecture and an intelligent management system intended to enhance operational efficiency, reduce project footprint, and support long-term grid reliability and stability. Of the 252 units, 108 batteries equivalent to 700 megawatt-hours will be allocated to the Oviedo project.
The remaining 144 batteries, totaling 800 megawatt-hours, will be installed at the Escuderos site. This is not the first commercial relationship between the two companies. Grenergy and CATL had previously signed a strategic agreement for the supply of 1.25 gigawatt-hours of batteries for Gabriela, Phase IV of the Oasis de Atacama project in Chile.
Oviedo: Greenbox's Stand-Alone Storage Flagship
The Oviedo project is considered the flagship initiative of Greenbox, Grenergy's stand-alone battery platform in Europe. With a total capacity of 700 megawatt-hours, Grenergy expects the project to enter into operation in the first half of 2027.
The company has already secured a 10-year financial tolling agreement for Oviedo, which it describes as a pioneering arrangement in the Spanish market. The counterparty is an international utility rated Investment Grade by Moody's. Greenbox maintains a total pipeline of more than 30 gigawatt-hours in stand-alone batteries across Europe.
The platform has operations or pipeline presence across Poland, where it has 5 gigawatt-hours in development, Romania with 7 gigawatt-hours, Germany with 3 gigawatt-hours, Italy with 5.8 gigawatt-hours, Spain with 6 gigawatt-hours, and the United Kingdom with 4 gigawatt-hours.

Escuderos: Hybrid Solar and Storage Model
The Escuderos project represents Grenergy's flagship hybrid initiative in Spain. The complex will combine 200 megawatts of solar generation capacity with 680 megawatt-hours of battery storage. Construction of the battery energy storage system is scheduled to begin in the second half of 2026, with commissioning targeted for 2027.
Escuderos already has commercial arrangements in place for both its storage and solar components. The project holds a 12-year financial tolling agreement for its batteries, which will come into effect in July 2028.
The solar portion of the plant is covered by a 12-year power purchase agreement signed with Galp in 2020. Grenergy has described Escuderos as a replication of the solar-storage hybrid model it developed in Chile through its Oasis de Atacama and Oasis Central platforms, which the company identifies as the origin of its hybridization approach.
The 144 CATL batteries assigned to Escuderos totaling 800 megawatt-hours exceed the site's stated 680 megawatt-hours storage specification, with 800 megawatt-hours cited as the total battery volume being supplied for installation at that location.
Spain as a Strategic Market
Grenergy is positioning Spain as one of its priority markets for the coming years. The company says it intends to simultaneously develop both stand-alone storage assets and hybrid projects in the country as part of its broader European energy transition strategy.
David Ruiz de Andrés, chief executive officer of Grenergy, commented on the agreement: "We are very proud to have a strategic partner like CATL to help us drive our flagship energy storage projects in Spain.
After developing large-scale initiatives in Chile, we want to bring that expertise to Europe with assets in both stand-alone and hybrid projects that contribute to a safer, more flexible, cleaner and more competitive power system."
