European Energy has completed the sale of a portfolio of 12 wind turbines in the municipality of Waadhoeke, the Netherlands, to local Dutch company Westra, as part of the Copenhagen-headquartered developer's active portfolio management strategy.

Transaction Details

The 12 wind turbines, which together total 6 MW of generating capacity, have been transferred to Westra, a Friesland-based company with activities spanning infrastructure projects, earthmoving and green maintenance.

Westra is headquartered in the municipality of Waadhoeke, placing it in close proximity to the wind assets included in the deal. Ploum acted as legal adviser to European Energy in connection with the transaction, which was announced on 3 June 2026.

European Energy originally acquired the wind turbines in 2021 and has managed and operated the assets since then, working to enhance their long-term value before completing the divestment.

Capital Recycling at the Core

The transaction is consistent with European Energy's stated business model of developing, optimizing, and operating renewable energy assets throughout their lifecycle and then redeploying capital when assets reach maturity.

According to Daniel Axelsen, Interim Country Manager for the Netherlands at European Energy, the approach is central to how the company funds growth across its European pipeline. "Active portfolio management is a core element of our business model and growth strategy," Axelsen said.

"We develop, optimize, and operate renewable energy assets throughout their lifecycle. As assets mature, we continuously evaluate opportunities to realize value and recycle capital into new projects in European Energy. This transaction reflects that approach and allows us to continue expanding our development activities across our markets while, in this case, ensuring the assets remain in local ownership."

The proceeds from the divestment will be redeployed into the development, construction, and operation of new renewable energy projects across European Energy's growing European pipeline.

A Strategic Step for Westra

For Westra, the acquisition represents a significant expansion of its renewable energy activities and advances the company's stated ambition to operate fully emission-free by 2030.

Pieter Westra, Managing Director of the company, described the deal as an important milestone, emphasizing the significance of keeping ownership of the assets within the local region.

"This acquisition marks an important step in strengthening our renewable energy activities and in realizing our ambition to operate fully emission-free by 2030," Pieter Westra said.

"For us, local ownership is key: we believe energy projects should be rooted in the communities they serve. By taking over these assets, we ensure that both value and responsibility remain in the region while continuing to build a sustainable energy future in Friesland." The acquisition is also described as supporting Westra's ongoing efforts in relation to local electrification in the Friesland region.

Dutch Market Appetite Remains Strong

The deal is presented by European Energy as reflective of continued demand for operating renewable energy assets in the Netherlands from both strategic and local investors.

The sale to a locally rooted company with infrastructure and green maintenance operations illustrates a broader pattern of regional businesses seeking to build direct stakes in the energy transition infrastructure close to their own communities and operations.

Waadhoeke, the municipality where the wind turbines are located, serves as the geographic backdrop for both sides of the transaction, with the buyer's headquarters and the assets themselves situated in the same locality. European Energy noted that the structure of the deal ensures the assets remain under local ownership following the transfer.
