EDF Power Solutions has announced early-stage plans to develop the Nant y Maen Onshore Wind Farm, a proposed renewable energy project situated east of Tregaron in Wales.
The project could have an installed capacity of up to 150 MW, sufficient to meet the equivalent electricity needs of 146,000 average UK households, based on estimates that a typical household in England, Scotland, and Wales uses 2,700 kWh of electricity per year.
The announcement marks the beginning of a development process that will involve environmental assessments, community consultation, and formal planning submissions before any final decisions are made on whether the project proceeds.
Project Scope and Local Economic Ambitions
EDF Power Solutions has framed the Nant y Maen proposal as an initiative designed to support Wales' transition to clean energy, strengthen energy security, and deliver economic benefits to local communities. The company has stated that Welsh businesses have already been contracted to support the project from its outset.
Dulas, an environmental consultancy based in Machynlleth, has been appointed to lead the Environmental Impact Assessment for the project. South Wales-based BSG Ecology will provide specialist ecological support and help identify how a net benefit for biodiversity can be achieved on the site.
EDF Power Solutions has also indicated that its Aberystwyth Service Center team is positioned to manage long-term operation and maintenance of the site should the project proceed, a commitment the company has described as keeping the work close to home and ensuring continued benefit to Welsh communities.
Victoria Gee, Project Development Manager at EDF Power Solutions, said the proposed wind farm represented more than a renewable energy project. "It's a chance to strengthen energy resilience, support high-quality local jobs and invest in Welsh businesses," she said.
Gee also pointed to the broader context of global uncertainty over energy supply and costs, describing renewable energy projects as vital to addressing those challenges.
Early Development Steps Underway
The project is at an early stage of development, with several initial steps already taken or planned. EDF Power Solutions has submitted an application to Ceredigion County Council to erect meteorological masts at the site, which will be used to collect wind speed data necessary for assessing the project's viability.
Initial ecological and other feasibility studies have also begun. The company has said it will submit a scoping report to Planning and Environmental Decisions Wales, which is the body responsible for handling planning applications of this nature in Wales.
Community engagement is also planned for later in the year. EDF Power Solutions has said it will hold events in the autumn to share information about the project and gather early feedback from people living and working in the surrounding area, with dates and details to be announced in due course.

Alignment with Welsh Government Energy Policy
EDF Power Solutions has described the Nant y Maen Wind Farm as closely aligned with the Welsh Government's vision to make Wales a world leader in renewable energy and to invest in the green industries of tomorrow.
The company has not elaborated on specific Welsh Government targets or policy frameworks in its announcement, but positioned the project as a contribution to tackling climate change alongside efforts to address energy supply and cost pressures.
The project's location in Ceredigion and its use of Welsh-based consultancies and operational teams reflect an approach that the company says is intended to keep economic benefits within Wales throughout the development and operational phases of the wind farm.
What Comes Next
With the scoping report submission to Planning and Environmental Decisions Wales on the horizon and autumn community consultation events being prepared, Nant y Maen remains at the earliest stages of its development journey.
The meteorological mast application to Ceredigion County Council represents the most concrete regulatory step taken so far, while the ecological studies being conducted by BSG Ecology will inform the wider Environmental Impact Assessment being led by Dulas.
No timeline has been provided for when a full planning application might be submitted, nor has EDF Power Solutions indicated when a final investment decision on the project could be expected.
The company has been clear that the announcement reflects early-stage plans and that significant work lies ahead before the project can move toward construction.
