China has successfully installed a record-breaking offshore central processing platform as part of the Phase I development of the Kenli 10-2 oilfield in the Bohai Sea. The installation marks a major milestone for the region's energy infrastructure and highlights significant advances in offshore engineering and digital integration.
Engineering Feat in Offshore Oil Development
The newly installed platform stands 22.8 meters tall, spans an area equal to nearly 15 standard basketball courts, and has a design weight exceeding 20,000 tons—making it the largest and heaviest offshore platform ever deployed in the Bohai Sea.
Due to its massive scale, the construction team used float-over installation technology, leveraging tidal variations to accurately position the upper deck onto the pre-installed jacket. This technique was chosen over conventional crane lifts, which are limited by weight capacity.
To ensure precision and safety, artificial intelligence algorithms and digital tools were used throughout the installation. Three BeiDou satellite positioning systems were deployed on the main installation vessel to assist with accurate placement.
Project Nearing Completion
The Kenli 10-2 oilfield Phase I project is over 85% complete, and efforts are underway to expedite construction to begin production within the year. The field is part of the larger Bohai Oilfield cluster, which is critical to China’s energy production goals.
Upon completion of both phases, the Kenli 10-2 oilfield is expected to significantly contribute to the Bohai Oilfield’s target of producing 40 million tons of oil and gas annually. Proven geological crude oil reserves at the site exceed 100 million tons.
Strengthening China’s Energy Security
The Kenli 10-2 development is a strategic component of China's energy security agenda. As the Bohai Oilfield remains the country’s largest base for crude oil production, the new platform is expected to bolster domestic reserves, reduce reliance on imports, and enhance supply stability—especially in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei and broader Bohai region.
