Chevron has signed an agreement with Israel Natural Gas Lines, a state-owned pipeline operator, to start building the Nitzana natural gas pipeline, which will move gas from the Leviathan gas field to Egypt. The Nitzana pipeline route will transport around 600 million cubic feet of natural gas per day once construction finishes in approximately three years, according to Chevron. This new infrastructure will bring Israel's total export capacity to Egypt to more than 2.2 billion cubic feet per day. The pipeline project is designed to ease an energy crisis in Egypt, which has spent billions of dollars on importing liquefied natural gas. Last month, the owners of the Leviathan natural gas field off Israel signed a USD 35 billion export deal to supply gas to Egypt. The Leviathan field is owned by NewMed, Chevron, and Ratio Energies, and holds gas reserves of approximately 600 billion cubic meters. Gas producer Energean has announced plans to send up to 2 billion cubic metres of gas annually through the Nitzana pipeline from its Katlan field offshore Israel. The Katlan field is scheduled to start production in 2027.

The pipeline announcement was made on the same day a United Nations Commission of Inquiry concluded that Israel had committed genocide in Gaza. Israel responded by calling the UN assessment "scandalous" and "fake."
