ACCIONA Energía Secures 151 MW Solar Capacity in Italy's Public Auction to Build Two Photovoltaic Plants
ACCIONA Energía will build two new photovoltaic plants in Sicily after securing 151MW of solar capacity in Italy's latest FERX public renewable energy auction. The Spanish renewable energy company announced on December 11, 2025, that it had won the capacity allocation for two solar projects in the municipality of Lentini, in the province of Siracusa.
Project Details and Specifications
The two solar projects are Panbianco, with a capacity of 100.8 MWp, and Benante, with a capacity of 50.2 MWp. Construction is set to begin in 2026, with commercial operation expected by the end of 2027. Both facilities will be located in the municipality of Lentini, in the province of Siracusa, Sicily. Together, the Panbianco and Benante projects will produce around 277.5GWh per year, generating enough electricity to meet the demand of more than 55,000 people.
The clean energy produced by these facilities will prevent more than 125,000 tons of CO2 emissions annually, equivalent to taking nearly 50,000 internal combustion engine vehicles off the road.
Italy's FERX Auction Mechanism
The FERX mechanism represents Italy's long-term Contracts for Difference (CfD) system, specifically designed to accelerate the deployment of renewable energies by ensuring price stability over 20 years. This system enables the country to advance its decarbonization efforts while providing certainty and guarantees to developers and investors in the renewable energy sector.
The auction system allows renewable energy companies to secure long-term contracts that provide predictable revenue streams, reducing investment risks and encouraging further development of clean energy infrastructure throughout Italy.

ACCIONA's Established Presence in Italy
ACCIONA has maintained a strong presence in Italy for more than 25 years, primarily through its water and construction businesses. The company has completed several landmark projects in the country, including the construction of multiple sections of the Apulia sanitation system, the Fuente Presidiana drinking water treatment plant, and the breakwater at the Port of Ravenna.
In the renewable energy sector, ACCIONA Energía currently operates 156MW of capacity across four wind farms in Italy. These existing facilities include the Cocullo wind farm in Abruzzo, the Isola and Sant'Anna wind farms in Calabria, and the Caccamo wind farm in Sicily. The addition of the two new photovoltaic plants will significantly expand the company's renewable energy footprint in the Italian market.
Environmental Impact and Energy Production
The environmental benefits of the two new solar installations will be substantial. The annual reduction of more than 125,000 tons of CO2 emissions represents a significant contribution to Italy's climate goals and emission-reduction targets. The comparison to removing nearly 50,000 internal combustion engine vehicles from the road illustrates the scale of the environmental impact these projects will achieve.
The 277.5GWh of annual electricity production from both facilities will contribute meaningfully to Italy's renewable energy generation capacity. The power output is sufficient to supply electricity to more than 55,000 people, representing a notable addition to the country's clean energy supply. The projects align with Italy's broader renewable energy expansion efforts and support the nation's transition away from fossil fuel dependence.
The FERX auction mechanism through which ACCIONA secured these projects demonstrates Italy's commitment to creating favorable conditions for renewable energy development while ensuring long-term price stability for both developers and consumers.
