ABB Awarded Contract for Electric Systems on Singapore's First Floating LNG Terminal
Hanwha Ocean has awarded ABB the contract to supply a complete electric power and propulsion system for Singapore's first floating liquefied natural gas terminal. The South Korean shipbuilder selected ABB to provide integrated electrical systems for the Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU).
Technical Specifications and Systems
ABB's integrated electrical system for the floating terminal will comprise several key components. The system includes a medium voltage generator and 6.6kV switchboards specifically designed for cargo and regasification operations. The propulsion system will feature ABB's motor, transformer, and drive technology. The FSRU will be equipped with ABB's remote control and remote diagnostics system, providing operational monitoring capabilities.
Additional safety and monitoring features include ABB's proven condition monitoring solution and an enhanced power protection system (EPPS).
Project Timeline and Ownership Structure
The floating terminal is scheduled for delivery to owner Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) in 2027. Singapore LNG Corporation (Singapore LNG) has contracted the FSRU for long-term charter operations. The facility will have a storage capacity of 200,000 cubic meters of LNG. The FSRU will be moored at Jurong Port and connected to Singapore's gas network in 2030. MOL will manage the facility's operations once it becomes operational.

Strategic Impact on Singapore's Energy Infrastructure
The new FSRU represents a strategic investment in Singapore's energy infrastructure and forms a key component of the city-state's energy transition toward net-zero emissions. Singapore LNG has signed contracts to process five million tons of LNG per annum at the floating facility. The floating terminal will add operational flexibility and increase Singapore's LNG importing capacity by 50% compared to the current single landside terminal in Jurong.
This expansion will enhance Singapore's position as an LNG hub in the Asian market.
Industry Context and Market Outlook
Wood Mackenzie data shows that Asia Pacific accounted for two-thirds of global LNG demand in 2024. The research firm anticipates continued high levels of activity in the region as stakeholders work to balance energy security considerations with economic realities. Rune Braastad, Global Business Line Manager for Marine Systems at ABB's Marine & Ports division, highlighted the significance of the collaboration.
"We are proud to continue our long-lasting collaboration with Hanwha Ocean by supplying an integrated electrical system for Singapore's first FSRU," Braastad stated. "This collaboration underscores our shared commitment to innovation, reliability, and sustainability, and is ABB's latest contribution to the critical infrastructure supporting Singapore's position as an important LNG hub in Asia."
The project demonstrates the ongoing partnership between Hanwha Ocean and ABB in developing marine infrastructure solutions. The floating terminal project contributes to the broader development of LNG infrastructure across the Asia Pacific region, where demand continues to drive new facility construction and capacity expansion.
