400MWh Tesla Battery Storage System Begins Commercial Operations in Queensland
400MWh Tesla Battery Storage System Begins Commercial Operations in Queensland State-owned energy company CS Energy announced yesterday that its 200MW/400MWh Greenbank battery energy storage system has started commercial operations in Queensland, Australia. The project officially began commercial operations in June 2025.
System Specifications and Location
The 2-hour duration battery energy storage system features 108 Tesla Megapack 2XL units and is located in the rural residential suburb of Greenbank, southeast of Brisbane, the state capital. The facility is connected to the National Electricity Market, which spans Australia's southern and eastern coasts as well as Tasmania.
The system is situated adjacent to Powerlink Queensland's Greenbank substation, which supplies electricity to Southeast Queensland, particularly the Gold Coast, Logan and South Brisbane areas. The Tesla Megapack is based on Tesla's integrated solution, which includes lithium-ion batteries, power conversion system, thermal management and controls.
Construction Timeline and Investment
Site work for the Greenbank Battery commenced in late 2023, with a peak construction workforce of 60 people. CS Energy confirmed that the Greenbank battery energy storage system required an investment of AU$300 million (US$197 million) to fully develop.
CS Energy worked with Tesla, Consolidated Power Projects, and Powerlink Queensland to deliver the Greenbank Battery. The project underwent what CEO Brian Gillespie described as a "rigorous" testing and commissioning process, reaffirming beliefs that Australia has some of the toughest grid codes in the world.
CS Energy's Battery Portfolio Expansion
The battery energy storage system becomes the second utility-scale battery storage system that CS Energy has brought online after its 100MW/200MWh Chinchilla battery in Queensland's Western Downs Region last year.
Like the Greenbank Battery, Chinchilla features 80 Tesla Megapack 2XL units. CS Energy also undertook a detailed operational readiness program for the Greenbank facility, which included employee training, critical risk assessments, and safety and design reviews, according to CEO Brian Gillespie.
Tesla Megapack Deployment in Queensland
Tesla Megapack 2XL units are also being used at Stanwell's 300MW/1,200MWh battery energy storage system at the Stanwell Power Station in central Queensland. Stanwell is another state-owned energy company.
The first of the Megapack units for the Stanwell project arrived last week, with 324 set to be delivered in total in the coming months.
