Denmark-based Ørsted has bought online its first utility-scale solar plus battery storage project, the 460MW Permian Energy Center project, which is located in Andrews County in the state of Texas, US.
The Permian Energy Center couples 420MW of utility-scale solar PV with a 40MW battery facility. The solar plant in this arrangement consists of 1.3 million PV panels and has an estimated output that is enough to satisfy the consumption of over 80,000 US homes. The electricity generated by this plant will be supplied to West Texas. The project sits on a 3,600-acre site that also houses oil and gas installations.
The Permian energy scheme is a legacy project acquired with the takeover of US developer Lincoln Clean Energy in 2018.
Neil O'Donovan, chief operations officer of Ørsted's onshore business in the US, said "Permian Energy Center is a significant milestone, making [us] the first developer to own the full spectrum of new renewable energy technologies at utility-scale in the US - onshore and offshore wind, solar PV, and storage."
