RWE and Haltermann Carless Plans to Develop Green Hydrogen Project in Harwich, UK

Last Updated on 15th April 2024

RWE, one of the leading renewable energy companies in Europe, and Haltermann Carless, a prominent supplier of hydrocarbon-based products and solvents, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on the development of a green hydrogen plant in Harwich, Essex, in the south-east of the UK.

The plant would be situated on land within the Haltermann Carless industrial site in Harwich, which serves as a key production facility, manufacturing a range of products for the agrochemicals and fuel additive businesses. The project will play a significant role in the UK electrolyser market.

Haltermann Carless is spearheading the development of sustainable products aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions, including the prospective production of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) from the Harwich site.

Once constructed, the clean hydrogen produced from the Harwich electrolyzer could facilitate the reduction of CO2 emissions for the company and enable the sustainable production of a broader range of products. RWE and Haltermann Carless have both completed feasibility studies for the green electrolyzer, and work is still in progress to evaluate grid and water connections for the project's advancement.

The Harwich site's proximity to the Freeport East area is integral to the government’s leveling-up agenda and aligns with the UK’s net-zero ambitions. This adjacency creates economic and employment opportunities through the transition to green technologies.

Objectives of the Project

The joint venture aims to contribute significantly to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and foster sustainable practices. Let’s delve into the key objectives of this groundbreaking project.

Fostering Sustainable Practices

One of the primary objectives of this project is to foster sustainable practices. Haltermann Carless Harwich is committed to actively contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. The development of the green hydrogen plant is a significant stride towards this goal.

Production of Sustainable Aviation Fuels

The project also aims to drive the development of sustainable products, which includes the future production of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) from the Harwich site. SAFs are fuels produced from sustainable resources and are designed to reduce the carbon footprint of aviation.

Advancing Green Hydrogen Opportunities

RWE has a wealth of knowledge and experience in the development of green hydrogen projects in Europe.  The company is targeting 2GW of green hydrogen electrolyser capacity in its core markets by 2030. The green hydrogen plant in Harwich is part of this broader objective.
