Project Overview
Wambo Wind Farm is a renewable energy project located near Jandowae in the Western Downs Region of Queensland. With a total capacity of 506 MW, the project will be developed in two stages, with an expected completion date of 2026.
Developed by Cubico Sustainable Investments and Stanwell, it comprises 83 Vestas wind turbines (Stage I - 42 & Stage II - 41). It will power approximately 312,000 homes upon its full completion. Furthermore, it is expected to create approximately 200 new jobs in its construction phase and around 8 to 9 jobs for ongoing management and maintenance upon its operation.
Project Background & Details
The Wambo Wind Farm project is developed by a 50:50 joint venture between Cubico Sustainable Investment, a major investor in the renewable energy sector globally, and Stanwell, a Queensland Government-owned electricity generator.
It is part of Stanwell’s broader commitment to build a geographically and technologically diverse energy portfolio that supports Queensland’s future energy needs.
The project development work started with an ecological field investigation in November 2019. Furthermore, in October 2020, the Queensland government approved a 500 MW wind farm, along with a 50 MW/200 MWh battery storage facility and associated infrastructure.
Funded by a USD 455.8 million investment from the Queensland Government’s Renewable Energy and Hydrogen Jobs Fund for Stanwell’s share, the Wambo Wind Farm lines up with the Queensland Energy and Jobs Plan, targeting 70% renewable energy by 2032 and 80% by 2035.
As planned to be developed in two stages, the Wambo Wind Farm project has a total capacity of 506 MW. It comprises 83 Vestas Wind Turbines, each standing 247 meters tall from base to tip. Located on approximately 12,500 hectares of cleared grazing land, the site is designed to maximize energy production while minimizing land-use disruption. It will neutralize carbon dioxide emissions of up to 1.1 million tonnes yearly.

The Wambo Wind Farm renewable energy project is located 15 km Northeast of Jandowae in the Western Downs Region of Queensland, Australia. It is the site chosen for its excellent wind resources and attractive grid connectivity.
This project site is located within the 2,000 MW Southern Renewable Energy Zone in Queensland’s Western Downs, near Stanwell’s Tarong Power Station.

The total estimated cost of the Wambo Wind Farm project is approximately USD 911.6 million, based on doubling Stanwell’s share of USD 455.8 million for a 50:50 joint venture. However, it may reach up to USD 1 billion when including the equity. Cubico financing comprises USD 650 million in debt.

Wambo Wind Farm Project Financing
Stanwell’s 50% share of Wambo Wind Farm is funded by nearly USD 455.8 million investment from the Queensland Government’s Renewable Energy and Hydrogen Jobs Fund. It covers funding for both Stage I and Stage II of the project.
The Cubico Sustainable Investment exceeded its financial close in December 2024. It also includes both stages of the Wambo Wind Farm project. Two separate five-year project finance facilities have been secured, totaling A$650 million (USD 412 million). The providing association banks include ANZ, Credit Agricole, ING, NAB, and Westpac.

Wambo Wind Farm Vestas
Vestas is the primary supplier of the Wambo Wind Farm project. It gives long-term service support and provides advanced technology. A total of 83 Vestas V162-6.2 MW turbines will be installed in two stages. The specifications of the Vestas V162 wind turbines include the following:

Wambo Wind Farm Stage 1
The Wambo Wind Farm Stage 1 comprises 42 Vestas V162-6.2 wind turbines, each standing 247 meters above the ground. Upon operation (expected by late 2025), it will have a total capacity of 252 MW (each wind turbine will generate 6.2 MW of electricity). It is anticipated that Stage 1 would power approximately 170,500 homes annually.
Its construction started in June 2023, and as of July 2025, eight turbines were completed, with the first six operational since June 2025. Twelve turbines were erected by April 2025, and commissioning is underway. It will benefit the environment by neutralizing up to 1.1 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions yearly.
Wambo Wind Farm Stage 2
The Wambo Wind Farm is the extension of Stage 1. It comprises 41 Vestas V162-6.2 wind turbines. Upon its completion (expected by 2026), it will have a total capacity of 254.2 MW, bringing the total capacity to 506 MW. With a height of 247 meters for each turbine, it is positioned as one of the largest onshore turbines in Australia.
Its construction started in mid-2024, and as of July 2025, foundation concrete pours are completed, with the construction ongoing and on track for completion by 2026.
Wambo Wind Farm Connectivity
Powerlink has engaged with Cubico and Stanwell to connect the wind farm to the transmission network. For this purpose, it entered the construction of a double circuit 275 kV transmission line between the substation at Diamondy on the Wambo Wind Farm site, tracking east for around 47 km and connecting into Powerlink’s existing Halys Substation (located approximately 11km south-east of Kumbia township).
