USDA Invests $207 Million in Rural Renewable Energy and Fertilizer Projects

The US Department of Agriculture has announced a significant investment of USD 207 million in rural renewable energy and domestic fertilizer projects. The funding is part of the US administration’s Inflation Reduction Act.

The USDA awarded USD 157 million for 675 projects located in 42 states under the Rural Energy for America Program. 

 

The initiatives include the installation of a solar array, which comprises an interconnected collection of solar panels, to assist a wastewater treatment facility in Colorado; the establishment of a solar photovoltaic system on a soybean farm in Pennsylvania; and the conversion of a meat company in South Dakota that produces beef jerky to an energy-efficient refrigeration system.

Around USD 94 million of the Rural Energy Program funding is allocated via the Inflation Reduction Act, and the awards aim to help farmers and agricultural producers.

 

Additionally, seven fertilizer projects in seven states will receive fifty million dollars from the USDA via the Fertilizer Production Expansion Program. The program was created to expand US fertilizer production.

The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 (IRA) is a landmark piece of U.S. legislation passed in August 2022 that aims to address several key concerns. The IRA provides tax incentives and other support for clean energy and energy efficiency, aiming to lower energy costs and stabilize supply chains.

 

The Act allocates USD 783 billion for provisions across various areas, with USD 663 billion in tax incentives and USD 27 billion for a green bank focused on clean energy initiatives. Some of the projects include:

 

Solar energy: Projects include the 450 MW Silicon Ranch solar farm in Texas and the 300 MW Gemini Sun solar farm in Alabama.
