What Does the Future Look Like for Lithium-ion Battery Manufacturing in India?

Favorable government policies (such as the FAME India scheme), rapid adoption of EV technologies, various state-level EV policies, and other factors have majorly impacted India’s lithium-ion battery market size. Moreover, domestic lithium-ion battery manufacturing is expected to increase in the coming years to make the country self-sufficient for its energy needs.

Various companies in India are enhancing lithium-ion battery production capabilities through indigenous manufacturing facilities and business ventures, such as acquisitions and partnerships.

For example, ARBL (Amara Raja Batteries Limited—the flagship company of one of India’s leading business conglomerates, Amara Raja Group) is planning to set up a lithium-ion battery unit in Telangana, Hyderabad, with advanced laboratories and testing infrastructure.

Another example is Chennai-based MIL (Munoth Industries Limited), which has a technology agreement with China-based battery manufacturer, Tianjin Lishen Battery Joint-Stock Co., Ltd. (Lishen Battery). A company press release reported that MIL has set up “India’s maiden lithium cell manufacturing unit” in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh, India.

According to another industry news source, Indian battery maker Exide Industries has begun mass production at “India’s largest lithium-ion battery plant” in Gujarat with its joint venture partner, Leclanché SA (a Switzerland-based lithium-ion cell company).

Let’s look at a few other developments in the Li-ion battery manufacturing landscape:

Luminous Power Technologies (India’s leading power and home electrical specialist) also partnered with Matter Energy (an integrated energy solutions company) to develop a lithium-ion battery solution for mobility and domestic energy storage applications.

On the other hand, an industry news source confirmed the acquisition of assets of Lithium Werks (a lithium battery technology company) by Reliance Industries (an Indian multinational conglomerate) in a big push toward providing a robust supply chain to the growing electric vehicle battery demands and energy storage markets.

Furthermore, the discovery of new lithium reserves provides further opportunities for lithium battery manufacturers in India to develop domestic reserves and depend less on imports while potentially reducing the cost of lithium-ion batteries and making EVs more affordable for consumers.

Lithium ion Battery News 2025

On 9th July 2025, a joint report by ICEA and Accenture revealed that the right policy intervention India can unlock a USD 3.5 billion lithium ion battery recycling industry by 2030 which can save up to 5,700 million gallons of water annually and reduce up to 75 kilo tonnes per year.

On 22nd January 2025, Tata Motors announced its investment of USD 1.5 billion in a local battery Gigafactory through its arm Agratas. This Gigafactory is expected to begin construction by 2026 and began its operation by 2028. On 19th February 2025, India's Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) signed a 10 GWh Programme Agreement with Reliance New Energy Battery Limited under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for Advanced Chemistry Cell (ACC).

Wrapping Up

Ever since lithium-ion batteries were introduced in the market, they have completely revolutionized our lives.

From digital watches and laptops to smartphones and global positioning system devices, the potential of Li energy extends beyond portable electronic devices.

According to an independent study conducted by the CEEW (Council on Energy, Environment and Water), India will need over USD 4 billion of investments to create 50 GWh of lithium-ion cell and battery manufacturing capacity under the PLI (Production-Linked Incentive) scheme.

Lithium-ion battery suppliers in India are also stepping up efforts for battery recycling (to reduce pressure on the environment) and cutting down on imports of battery raw material components like cobalt.

For instance, Tata Chemicals (a subsidiary of the Tata Group) is recycling spent Li-ion batteries to recover valuable materials like lithium, cobalt, and nickel, which are reused in adhesive, paint, pigment, and lithium-ion battery manufacturing, among others.

As batteries become indispensable for making our lives better and brighter, lithium-ion battery manufacturers in India are supporting the country’s vision of a sustainable future powered by advanced Li-ion battery technology.
