13 GW renewable energy + 12 GWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS)

Location

Pang (Ladakh) to Kaithal (Haryana), via Himachal Pradesh and Punjab

Companies involved

Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID)

Status

Approved, targeted completion by FY 2029-30

The Green Energy Corridor Phase-II Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) in Ladakh is a flagship renewable energy evacuation project approved by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs in 2023. Designed to integrate 13 GW of renewable energy generation capacity along with 12 GWh of battery energy storage, the project will form a critical link in India’s transition to clean energy.

Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID) is the implementing agency, tasked with developing a 713 km transmission network that includes 480 km of Voltage Source Converter (VSC) based High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) lines.

The system will feature two 5 GW HVDC terminals, one at Pang in Ladakh and another at Kaithal in Haryana, where the project will connect with the National Grid. Additional connections will link the facility to the Ladakh grid and the Leh-Alusteng-Srinagar line, ensuring a reliable supply to Ladakh and Jammu & Kashmir.

The project has a total estimated cost of INR 20,773.70 crore, with central financial assistance covering 40% of the expenditure. Completion is targeted for FY 2029-30.

Capacity

11 GWh storage + 2 GW photovoltaic generation

Location

Atacama Desert, Chile (Port of Iquique as entry point for shipments)

Companies Involved

Grenergy (developer), BYD (battery supplier, 1.1 GWh), CATL (battery supplier, 1.25 GWh)

Status

Under construction, Phase 1 grid connection in 2024, remaining phases in 2025

Grenergy’s Oasis de Atacama project in Chile is set to become the world’s second-largest battery energy storage system (BESS), featuring a planned storage capacity of 11 GWh combined with 2 GW of photovoltaic generation.

The project is being developed in seven phases. Once completed, the facility will deliver around 5.5 TWh of energy annually, shifting solar generation into evening and night hours to stabilize Chile’s power system.

The project is backed by supply agreements with BYD and CATL. BYD will provide 1.1 GWh of battery products under its MC Cube ESS model, while CATL is contracted to deliver 1.25 GWh for phase four.

Recent milestones include the arrival of the first 600 MWh of BYD batteries at the port of Iquique in early 2025, marking a major step toward commissioning. Grenergy has also secured offtake agreements for the first four phases and is finalizing contracts for the remaining stages.

Companies Involved

Sungrow Power Supply (China), Algihaz Holding (Saudi Arabia)

Status

Deliveries began in 2024, full grid connection expected by 2025

Sungrow is moving ahead with one of the world’s largest grid-scale energy storage projects in Saudi Arabia. The company, in partnership with local investment firm Algihaz Holding, is delivering 7.8 GWh of storage capacity across three sites: Najran, Madaya, and Khamis Mushait. Each site will host 2.6 GWh of capacity, bringing the total to 7.8 GWh.

Equipment deliveries began in 2024, and full grid connection is expected during 2025. The project will rely on Sungrow’s PowerTitan 2.0 liquid-cooled storage systems, more than 1,500 of which will be deployed. These units feature an integrated AC storage design that reduces land requirements by more than half, while factory pre-installation ensures faster commissioning on site.

The systems are designed to support grid-forming and black start functions, while intelligent energy and battery management systems will oversee operations for reliability and safety.

PowerChina’s Ulanqab 1 GW / 6 GWh energy storage project

Capacity

1,000 MW / 6,000 MWh

Location

Chayouzhong Banner, Ulanqab, Inner Mongolia, China

Companies Involved

PowerChina (EPC), China Hydroelectric 16th Bureau, Fujian Yongfu Electric Power Design

Status

Construction began in June 2024, with completion planned within six months

PowerChina has started construction of what is being called the world’s largest generation-side electrochemical energy storage project in Chayouzhong Banner, Ulanqab, Inner Mongolia. The facility will have a capacity of 1,000 MW / 6,000 MWh and is being developed under an EPC turnkey model, which includes design, procurement, construction, and operation and maintenance services.

The system will include 1,200 lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery cabins of 5.016 MWh each, four 250 MVA dual-split transformers, and a new 220 kV transmission line connected to the Chayouzhong 500 kV substation. Covering 46.7 hectares, the project represents an investment of about CNY 6 billion (USD 833 million).

Once operational, the station will provide frequency regulation, load tracking, and market participation services, while significantly reducing wind power curtailment in the region. It is also expected to cut annual CO₂ emissions by 1.2 million tons by replacing coal-fired peak-shaving units.

Conclusion

The rapid rollout of multi-gigawatt-hour storage projects shows how energy storage has shifted from a supporting role to becoming core grid infrastructure. The U.S. is adding storage at a record pace, led by 18.2 GW of new capacity this year, but the most transformative projects are those underway in Saudi Arabia, Chile, China, and India. These mega-deployments range from BYD’s 12.5 GWh order in Saudi Arabia to PowerChina’s 6 GWh project in Inner Mongolia, and each marks a step change in what battery storage can deliver at the grid scale.

Developers like BYD, Grenergy, Sungrow, PowerChina, and POWERGRID are setting benchmarks for the industry by proving that utility-scale battery energy storage systems can operate at massive scale with reliability and efficiency. As they move toward completion between 2025 and 2030, these projects will define global best practices for design, deployment, and long-term operation, making 2025 the year battery storage became a cornerstone of the energy transition.
