Alinta Energy and JERA Nex, through its wholly owned subsidiary Parkwind, have formed a joint venture to develop the 1GW+ Spinifex Offshore Wind Farm in the Southern Ocean Region in South West Victoria, Australia. Alinta Energy and JERA Nex, under the joint venture agreement, will apply their respective expertise and capabilities to jointly develop the Spinifex offshore wind project.
The joint venture has identified a site for the project and will continue to engage with local stakeholders to refine their proposal and move the project forward. Alinta Energy's MD and CEO, Jeff Dimery, expressed excitement about working with the JERA Nex team, who bring strong experience as developers and operators.
"JERA and Parkwind both have a great track record in offshore wind and have pioneered some impressive engineering and construction techniques,” said Dimery. He also highlighted the shared vision of ensuring the project benefits communities in southwest Victoria.
The team at JERA Nex, which includes Parkwind, has extensive experience in offshore wind and in developing supply chains for new offshore wind regions. JERA Nex owns and operates seven wind farms around the world, including in Belgium, Germany, the UK, Japan, and Taiwan, and has a significant global pipeline.
The project completed a local supply chain and industry development study in 2023, which estimated that the project could contribute up to USD 1.04 billion during the construction period and USD 26 million per year during operation to the regional economy.
The Spinifex Offshore Wind Farm is a pioneering renewable energy project located off the coast of South West Victoria. The project was first announced in December 2021, marking the beginning of an ambitious journey towards harnessing the power of wind to meet Victoria's electricity needs.
