Kenya Wind Power Plant Industry Analysis
The wind power industry in Kenya has experienced significant growth in recent years, as the country looks to diversify its energy mix and reduce its reliance on fossil fuels. Kenya has set ambitious renewable energy targets, with a goal of generating 100% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2020. To achieve this goal, the government has been supporting the development of wind power projects across the country.
There are currently two operational wind farms in Kenya, the first of which was commissioned in 2014. The Kipeto Wind Farm is located in the central part of the country and consists of 35 turbines with a combined capacity of 100 MW. The Lake Turkana Wind Farm, which was commissioned in 2017, is located in the northwest of the country and consists of 365 turbines with a combined capacity of 310 MW.
In addition to these operational wind farms, there are several other wind power projects in various stages of development across the country. The most advanced of these is the Rabai Wind Farm, which is currently in the construction phase. This project consists of 22 turbines with a combined capacity of 46 MW and is expected to generate enough electricity to power around 32,000 homes.
Overall, the wind power industry in Kenya is making significant progress towards meeting the government's renewable energy targets. While there are challenges to overcome, such as the need to secure funding and navigate the planning process, the potential for wind power to contribute to the country's energy mix is significant. With the continued development of wind power projects, Kenya is well on its way to becoming a leader in renewable energy.
